Tax Credit Amount Increased For 2021

by Jeanne Wells Thill, executive director, CTO | Published September 9, 2021

In May 2021, an unprecedented move by Iowa legislators increased the percentage of a charitable contribution eligible for tax credits for donors who give to school tuition organizations in Iowa.  Since the inception of the program in 2006, donors received 65% of their contribution back in the form of Iowa tax credits. The dollar amount of available tax credits have increased over time but the percentage of the donation eligible for tax credits has never increased.  In 2021, not only did the tax credits increase by 10 percent, the change was retroactive to January 1, 2021.  For CTO donors that means they now receive 75 percent Iowa tax credits!

When you give to the Catholic Tuition Organization, you are providing tuition assistance to families in each of our sixteen Catholic elementary and high schools throughout the diocese.   Without tuition assistance, so many families couldn’t afford to send their children to Catholic schools in the Diocese of Des Moines.   On average, a family of four who receive tuition assistance, make approximately $58,000.  If that family has one child in elementary and one child in high school, without CTO they would be paying more than 21% of their gross income in tuition payments.  Through CTO, our donors help families attain the dream of a high quality, faith-filled, safe and loving education for the children!

A donation to the CTO has always been the best gift ever, and now donors receive 75% tax credits when they help Iowa families!
